The IOE’s Centre for Holocaust Education is hosting a special event on Wednesday 4th March from 5.30-7.30pm in Central London.

Dr Carl Wilkens is the former head of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International in Rwanda. In 1994, he was the only American who chose to remain in the country after the genocide began. He has produced a 40 minute documentary film, based on his book ‘I’m not leaving’, explaining the choices and actions he made during the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi that led to his rescuing of hundreds of people including over 200 children and adults in the Gisimba orphanage.

The documentary includes testimony from Dr Wilkens himself, his wife Teresa and other eyewitnesses to the genocide. It details Dr Wilkens encounters with genocide perpetrators from Interahamwe on the streets of Kigali through to the leaders of the genocidal government.

The documentary will be screened and then a Q&A session will follow with both Carl and Teresa. Carl will also have a few copies of his book, ‘I’m not leaving’ for people to purchase, with donations from £5 accepted gratefully.

  • 18:00 – I’m Not Leaving Documentary
  • 18:40 to 19:30 – Q&A with Carl Wilkins
