Paul Salmons, Programme Director, UCL Centre for Holocaust Education responds to today’s announcement:
“We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement today of the creation of a new memorial to the Holocaust next to the Houses of Parliament. But the ambition must go far beyond ‘never forgetting’ and ‘learning the lessons’, it must address the many myths and misconceptions about the Holocaust that continue to exist in British society; it must confront the deep flaws in modern society that led to genocide; and it must strengthen the public and political will to prevent future crimes against humanity that continue to scar our world. We will continue to work closely with the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, supporting this vital initiative through both our research and educational expertise, as we support teachers and students in thousands of classrooms throughout the country.”
